PLASTIC GROUND · LOCATION: QUEBEC, CA · YEAR: 2015 · STATUS: INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION · Plastic Ground presents an unassuming hill from a distance, covered with meadow grasses and wildflowers. Approaching the meadow garden, one sees the hill is bifurcated by a path cutting through it. The cut path reveals that the landform is composed of plastic bags, packed tightly into colored layers as geological strata. This constructed geological display of flexible plastic speaks to our practices of consumption and questions how we deal with materials considered to be waste. In landfills, waste is transported from a distance, deposited and then compacted into monumental landforms which are covered with a thin veneer of soil and planted over.
