Brooklyn Prep

Brooklyn, NY | 2011 | 4,500 sf | Schematic Design

Bushwick Prep is a day care center that is currently being designed for a non-profit organization whose mission is to endow young children from lower income neighbourhoods with the dream of going to college. The organization is dedicated to this project but the budget is minimal and must be maintained. The site currently has an abandoned auto body repair shop on it that needs to be torn down and the site needs significant remediation. The remediation itself will use a significant portion of the available funding. The design strategy was to use simple materials in a wide color palette to be engaging to children yet cost effective. The proposed design strives to create a warm environment while simultaneously maintaining a scholarly and academic atmosphere. Given that the site is long and narrow, and constrained on two sides by existing buildings, skylights have been proposed to bring light into all of the classrooms. The program includes (4) classrooms, a common work/ waiting area, a kitchen and play area.
